Camelot (n.)

late-14c, legendary castle of King Arthur, first found in medieval French romances; the name corresponds to Latin Camuladonum, the Roman forerunner of Colchester, which was an impressive ruin in the Middle Ages. But there are doubts about this identification and whether the French authors who first used the word would have known this location. It is not mentioned in the earliest traditions about Arthur, who Geoffrey of Monmouth describes keeping court in various locations including Silcester and Paris and "urbe Legionum" the latter being identified with Caerleon in Wales. Some scholars suggest confusion or corruption from places like Camlann or Caer Loyw (Gloucester) where Arthur was said to have fought legendary battles.
