14世纪晚期, “用于检测贵金属的小器皿”, 来自古法语 test, 来自拉丁语 testum “土罐”, 与 testa “一块烧过的粘土, 土罐, 贝壳” 有关(见 tete).

1590年代就有“试验或检查以确定某物的正确性” 的意义. 连接的概念是“通过在锅里熔化金属来确定它的质量”. Test Act 是英国历史上各种法律的名称, 意在排除天主教徒和非教徒的职务, 特别是1673年的法律, 1828年被废除. Test drive (v.) 最早记载于1954年.

test (v.)
