sky (n.)

13世纪, “一朵云”, 来自古北欧语 sky “云”, 来自原日耳曼语 *skeujam “云, 云层” (也是古英语 sceo, 古撒克逊语 scio “云, 云层的区域, 天空;” 古高德语 scuwo, 古英语 scua, 古北欧语 skuggi “影子;” 哥特语 skuggwa “镜子” 的来源), 来自PIE根 *(s) keu- “掩盖, 隐藏”.

意为“空气的上层区域”, 从14世纪开始得到证明; 在这个意义上取代了原生 heofon (见 heaven). 在中古英语中, 该词仍可同时指“云” 和“天”, 如仍在 the skies, 原为“云”. Sky-high 是1812年的; 短语 the sky's the limit 是1908年的证据. Sky-dive 1965年首次记录. sky-writing 是1922年的.
