14世纪中叶, remembren, “让(某事或某人) 铭记在心, 保留在记忆中”, 来自古法语 remembrer “记得, 回想, 使人想起” (11世纪), 来自拉丁语 rememorari “回想到脑海中, 记住”, 来自 re- “再次” (见 re-) + memorari “铭记”, 来自 memor “铭记” (来自PIE词根 *(s) mer- (1) “记住” ).

意思是“回忆到脑海中” 是14世纪末; “提及” 的意义是1550年代的. 在中古英语中也有“提醒” (某人), “使人想起” (某事); “交代, 叙述”. 盎格鲁-撒克逊的一个动词是 gemunan. 在 -m- 和后面的辅音之间插入 -b- (尤其是元音掉了的地方) 是有规律可循的:比较 number (n.), chamber (n.), humble (adj.).
