14世纪中叶, remembren ,"让(某事或某人)铭记在心,保留在记忆中",来自古法语 remembrer "记得,回想,使人想起"(11世纪),来自拉丁语 rememorari "回想到脑海中,记住",来自 re- "再次"(见 re- )+ memorari "铭记",来自 memor "铭记"(来自PIE词根 *(s)mer- (1)"记住")。

意思是"回忆到脑海中"是14世纪末;"提及"的意义是1550年代的。在中古英语中也有"提醒"(某人)、"使人想起"(某事);"交代、叙述"。盎格鲁-撒克逊的一个动词是 gemunan 。在 -m- 和后面的辅音之间插入 -b- (尤其是元音掉了的地方)是有规律可循的:比较 number (n.), chamber (n.), humble (adj.)。
