Watkins初步认定这来自于PIE *po-s(i) nere, 来自于 *apo- “关闭, 离开” (见 apo-) + *sinere “离开, 让” (见 site). 但de Vaan认定它来自Proto-Italic *posine-, 来自PIE *tkine- “建造, 居住”, 来自根 *tkei- “定居, 居住, 是家” (见 home (n.) ).

意思是“人或物所占据的地方”, 尤其是适当或合适的地方, 来自1540年代; 因此是“身份, 地位, 社会等级” (1832); “官职, 工作” (1890). 1703年就有了“某种实物的排列或摆放方式, 一个身体或人物与其他此类身体或人物的空间关系的总和” 的含义; 1778年具体指舞步, 1883年指性行为. 军事意义上的“被占领或将被占领的地方” 在1781年之前就有了.
