14世纪末, posicioun ,作为逻辑和哲学中的术语,"信仰的陈述,命题或论文的奠定",来自古法语 posicion "立场、假设"(现代法语 position ),直接来自拉丁语 positionem (名词 positio )"放置的行为或事实、情况、位置、肯定",状态名词来自 ponere "放、放置"的过去分词干。Watkins初步认定这来自于PIE *po-s(i)nere ,来自于 *apo- "关闭,离开"(见 apo- )+ *sinere "离开,让"(见 site )。但de Vaan认定它来自Proto-Italic *posine- ,来自PIE *tkine- "建造,居住",来自根 *tkei- "定居,居住,是家"(见 home (n.))。

意思是"人或物所占据的地方",尤其是适当或合适的地方,来自1540年代;因此是"身份、地位、社会等级"(1832);"官职、工作"(1890)。1703年就有了"某种实物的排列或摆放方式,一个身体或人物与其他此类身体或人物的空间关系的总和"的含义;1778年具体指舞步,1883年指性行为。军事意义上的"被占领或将被占领的地方"在1781年之前就有了。
