13世纪, “偶然, 一个人的运气, 幸运, 命运;” 也是“不可预见的发生”, 来自古北欧语 happ “偶然, 好运”, 来自古日耳曼语 *hap- (来源古英语 gehæ p “方便, 合适” ), 来自PIE *kob- “适合, 合适, 成功” (来源也是梵语 kob “好兆头; 祝贺, 祝愿”, 古爱尔兰语 cob “胜利”, 挪威语 heppa “幸运, 有利, 预兆”, 古教会斯拉夫语 kobu “命运, 预兆, 预兆” ). 英文中“good fortune” 的意思是来自13世纪早期的古北欧语似乎只有在积极的意义上有这个词.
