古英语 forgiefan “give, grant, allow; remit (a debt), pardon (an offense)”, 也有“give up” 和“give in marriage” (过去式 forgeaf, 过去分词 forgifen); 来自 for-, 这里可能是“完全”, + giefan “给予” (来自 PIE 根 *ghabh- “给予或接受” ).
