15世纪中叶, educaten, “抚养(儿童), 训练”, 来自拉丁文 educatus, educare 的过去分词“抚养, 抚养, 教育” (也是意大利文 educare, 西班牙文 educar, 法文 éduquer 的来源), 这是 educere “带出, 引出” 的常数, 或与 “带出” 有关, 来自 ex- “出” (见 ex-) + ducere “引出”, 来自PIE根 *deuk- “引出”. 意为“提供学校教育”, 最早见于1580年代. 相关: Educated; educating.

据《世纪大辞典》记载, educere, 对孩子来说, “通常是指身体上的养育或支持, 而 educare 更多的是指心灵”, 而且, “一般的说法是 education 的主要意义是'引出或展开心灵的力量', 这种说法没有权威性”.
