dope (n.)

1807年, 美式英语, “sauce, gravy; any thick liquid”, 来自荷兰语 doop “thick dipping sauce”, 来自 doopen “to dip” (见 dip (v.) ). 到19世纪末普遍用于任何未知成分的混合物或制剂.

到1889年扩展为“麻醉药”, 源于吸食半液态鸦片制剂的做法. “愚蠢, 愚蠢的人” 的含义比这更早(1851年), 可能来自“厚道” 的概念, 后来与“被麻醉品迷昏” 的概念联系起来.

“内幕消息” (1901年) 的意义可能来自于赛前知道哪匹马被下药影响了成绩(到 dope (v.) 在这个意义上的证明是1900年). Dope-fiend 是从1896年开始证明的, “鸦片习惯的受害者”.
