古英语单词的意义是"种子还在的谷物"(如 barleycorn ),而不是某一种植物。当地理解为表示一个地区的主要作物。一直以来,它仅限于美洲本土的"玉米"(17世纪,原 Indian corn ,但形容词被删除),在英国通常是"小麦",在苏格兰和爱尔兰是"燕麦",而 Korn ,在德国部分地区是指"黑麦"。
