compassion (n.)

“对正在受苦或经历不幸的人的悲哀或深深的柔情”, 14世纪中叶, compassioun, 字面意思是“与他人同甘共苦”, 来自古法语 compassion “同情, 怜悯” (12世纪), 来自晚期拉丁语 compassionem (代名词 compassio) “同情”, 状态名词来自 compati “感到怜悯” 的过去分词干, 来自 com “与, 一起” (见 com-) + pati “受苦” (见 passion).

拉丁文 compassio 是希腊文 sympatheia (见 sympathy) 的教会借译. 有时在中英文中, 它的意思是与他人分担苦难或痛苦. compassion 的古英语借译是 efenðrowung.
