13世纪晚期, conforten “在悲伤或困难时振作, 安慰, 抚慰”, 来自古法语 conforter “安慰, 慰藉; 帮助, 加强”, 来自晚期拉丁语 confortare “加强很多” (在武加大版中使用), 来自拉丁语 com- 的同化形式, 这里可能是强化前缀(见 com-), + fortis “强壮” (见 fort). -n- 改为 -m- 始于14世纪的英语.
