believe (v.)

古英语 belyfan “有信仰或信心” (对一个人), 更早的 geleafa (默西亚语), gelefa (诺桑布里亚语), gelyfan (西撒克逊语), 来自原日耳曼语 *ga-laubjan “相信”, 也许字面意思是“珍视(或有价值的, 或满意的), 爱” (来源也是古撒克逊语 gilobian “相信”, 荷兰语 geloven, 古高德语 gilouben, 德语 glauben), 最终是基于PIE根 *leubh- “关心, 渴望, 爱” 的复合词(见 belief).

意思是“被说服的真理” (一个学说, 系统, 宗教等) 是从13世纪中叶开始的; 意思是“信用的理由, 权威或证词, 没有完全证明, 接受为真正的” 是从14世纪早期开始的. 相关: Believed (以前有时是 beleft); believing.

beleeve 的形式在 17 世纪以前一直很常见, 后来可能受 relieve 等的影响, 拼写有所改变. 以 believe on 代替 in 在 16 世纪比较常见, 但现在是神学的一个特点; believe of 有时也被用于 17 世纪的表达方式. believe it or not 1874年, Robert Ripley的同名漫画是1918年的作品. 夸张 you better believe 从1854年开始证明.
