The noun meaning "act of assistance, backing" is recorded from 1390; sense of "that which supports" is from 1570. Meaning "services which enable something to fulfil its function and remain in operation" (e.g. tech support) is from 1953. Supportive (1593) is called "rare" in OED (1933).
