- 1881, from Fr. intransigeant, from Sp. los intransigentes, lit. "not coming to an agreement," name for extreme republican party in Sp. Cortes 1873-4, from in- "not" + transigente "compromising," from L. transigentem (nom. transigens), prp. of transigere "come to an agreement, accomplish, to carry through" (see transact). Acquired its generalized sense in French.
